I Am My Own Muse

The beauty I see in the world

Comes from my own eyes

My imagination takes me to

Destinations I’ve never been

My heart guides me through

Love stories never told

I refuse to be trapped in a box

Created by those who

Don’t know what it’s like to dream

Too scared that allowing others

To leave the box will mean

They’re all alone

With nothing to look forward to

I see the world in more than

The primary colors of the rainbow

I see the whole spectrum

From lavender to cerulean

To emerald and back

I studied the greats of art

I learned their ways

Figured out the complexities

Of their pieces

Frida Kahlo made a legacy

Painting self-portraits

Because she knew herself

Better than any other subject

It provided her with therapy

To distract from her pain

She made herself a household name and

Created art that is consistently affixed

To museums across the world

Collette used lessons she

Learned in love and sex

Throughout her three marriages

To derail society’s idea about

Topics women could discuss publicly

Now she’s remembered as

A prominent and prolific writer

Decorated with countless accolades

Critics will always exist

But that doesn’t mean their

Words must limit the art that

Is created by an artist

Who decides they want to be

The main character of their

Own life as imitated by their art

I am my own muse

That will never change

Everything I write is how I see the world
